From the Top

I found a new trick on my favorite photo-editing software. Sorry I can’t find another model.

Today is Day 12 of the 30-day blogging challenge.

The Reading Backlog

I sometimes wish there are more than 24 hours in a day so that I have time to read books.

I’ve been reading George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones series since August 2011and I am happy to say that I am already reading the 5th book,  A Dance with Dragons.

But there are still a lot of books I wanted to read. Next in line is the Steve Jobs biography and  Tina Fey’s Bossypants.

In my Kindle (desktop version), I downloaded as much free books as I could. Two books I bought are Samantha Sotto’s Before Ever After and Miguel Syjuco’s Ilustrado. Hurray for Filipino authors! ( I still have not read Ilustrado.)

I have ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen and ‘Crime and Punishment’ by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. In high school, the thickness of his ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ discouraged me from reading it. HA! With Kindle, I will not notice how thick the book is. There was a time that I just thought I should read a book from a Russian author so I started reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy but I never finished it.  Maybe I should start with J.R.T Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings‘. I have not seen the movies but I know it is good. Oscars said so.  The book must be very good because the book is usually better than the movie.

Good thing I have read these books before they were made into movies or else this backlog list will be longer.

I also want a dose of light and fun reading. I still have not gone through Melissa Senate’s books and this guilty pleasure. 😀

Maybe I should stop listing them down and go back to reading.

I want to ride my bike

♪♫♫ I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike. ♫♫

One of the skills I learned during my childhood was riding a bicycle. We lived in a small town  and in a housing unit in the compound where my father worked. My mother was a stay-at-home mom without a maid. I did not grow up with a maid in the house. When she needed to run errands, it was a hassle for her to walk several blocks to buy what she needed so she bought a bicycle.  We would ride the bicycle to school. I learned to ride the bike early on. There was a basketball court where I rode my bike with ease.

This is the only proof I have that I know how to ride a bike.

See? I even have a passenger.

I no longer know how to bike. I am hoping to re-learn that skill. When we moved to the city,  I was not allowed to ride my bike anymore because my parents feared I might bump into the cars in the city. Hopefully, I can find a wide open space free of cars where I can learn how to bike again. For now, I have to trust my feet to get me to places.

Today is Day 10 of the 30-day blogging challenge.

Happiness is the cure

If I check the statistics,  I am already approaching midlife.  My father died at 69. My mother, 61. If I base my own mortality on my parents’, the 30’s is my midlife.  No, I am not having a crisis nor an emo moment. I sometimes think of my health when I eat too much. HA! Excuse my morbid thoughts but I sometimes wonder what disease will kill me in the future.  I fear it might be a problem on the digestive system. I have abused those organs for years. 😳

I’ve always been a healthy child.  I am not using ‘healthy’ as a euphemism for being ‘fat’ or ‘chubby’.  I am healthy because I do not get sick often. I have been admitted to the hospital only once in my life and I cannot even remember it because I was a baby then.  I get cough and colds during the rainy season. I cannot remember the last time I had fever.  When I proudly pointed out to my mother that I am always healthy, she told me the reason why: it is what she prayed for. (Awww <3. l love you and miss you, mama.)

Life is short. Even with proper nutrition and lifestyle change, there is still no guarantee for longevity. For whatever health conditions a person may have, I think that happiness is the cure. 😀
